What We Lack In Size, We Make Up In Heart

I am just feeling pretty darn good about things today. I am fully vaccinated!! I started back as a substitute teacher for Girard 248 last week, and I sure did miss those kids. Plans are fully underway for Harrigans’ Barn less than two weeks away!! And we are working through the finals plans for the Community Feast with Mengarelli’s Italian Table on May 8th. Super excited for ALL of that. For today, I am in Arkansas on grand dog duty so Aubrey can play basketball out of state. And, as luck had it, it was the weekend for Vintage Market Days at the Benton County Fairgrounds. This is the Cadillac of all shows of this type in this region. They feature hundreds of vendors, some local, lots national and beyond, selling just about anything you could imagine. They had pony rides, a petting zoo, live music, food trucks, and folks selling some mighty fine stuff. I bought a t-shirt. I paid $10 to visit these fine business people and enjoyed my stroll through the barns. When I got home, I reflected on our upcoming event. Harrigans’ Barn Spring Market is just TWO weeks and I can’t wait.

We have 47 fine vendors for you to enjoy, each one distinct and unique in their craft. We do not charge to shop. I would prefer you spend that ten dollars celebrating the efforts of these dedicated craftspeople. We might not have 50 states represented but we do have three, and lots of counties, and one fabulous jewelry artist that winters on Arizona. We don’t have pony rides or the petting zoo, but you can love on Wilson, and our music is oldies streamed by my son. We don’t have food trucks, per say, but we will have fine walkable food provided by the fabulous cooks of First Christian Church, including Fleta’s amazing nachos and their pies, sold by the slice or the whole pie. And we have pork rinds, cookies, bbq seasonings, nuts and candy.

We have folks that are selling t-shirts, and wreaths and signs, a variety of home decor, handmade bags and commercial totes, plants, specialty dog items, quilts and embroidered creations. We have rusty junk and rusty art, repurposed antiques and polished up furniture. We have stunning jewelry for adults and kids, sweet bows for little girls and retro art. We celebrate and encourage local artisans and invite you to our beautiful rural property adjacent to the vintage barn that my dad built.

We don’t have animal dung underfoot, but we have just about everything else that the big show had except that we are in your back yard and we have gathered your neighbors and friends to sell you some stuff. We have put the welcome mat out for everyone to stop by with their family and friends to celebrate our hopeful future and an SEK spring. We may not be as fancy, but what we lack in size we make up in heart.

We will request you wear a mask and we have created our mitigation plan with the CrCo Health Dept. so that we can keep folks safe. I sure hope you stop by to see us on Saturday, April 24th from 9am to 4pm. We are located at 608 S. Sinnet in Girard, Kansas. See you soon at Harrigans’ Barn!
